Plot Twist on Chuckanut Drive: A High-Performance Retrofit

We’re getting started on a high-performance retrofit, and with this one, there’s a little bit of a plot twist! This log home, perched on a steep and exposed site along Chuckanut Drive (yes, the views are epic!), is undergoing major work. Log houses are tricky. But when we’re done, the structure will be ready to resist the high winds and weather, ensuring it’s warm & cozy for the family. They get the best of both worlds – a log cabin interior and more conventional, weather-tight exterior.

The structure combines log, timber frame, and conventional stud walls, creating both architectural interest and energy challenges. Existing wall and window assemblies suffer from significant air leakage, moisture intrusion, and poor thermal performance.

The exposed timber-frame gable wall is being structurally repaired and over-framed from the exterior to allow for a high-performance enclosure without altering the interior log aesthetic. Continuous air and water control layers, new cedar siding, and triple-pane windows by Extol will significantly improve airtightness, durability, and comfort. Lower sills will make the great views even better. Additional scope includes chimney and foundation repairs, replacing a wood-burning stove with a high-efficiency Ortal wilderness propane stove, and high-efficiency mechanical systems. Together, these interventions will transform this beautiful (but leaky) home into a durable, energy-efficient building suited for its demanding environment.
